Price the outcome

Clients don’t buy hours; they buy a result. Price the scope against the value it creates and the risk you are taking, then check it against your costs — not the other way round.

If you are proud to show the price, it’s probably right. If you hesitate, it’s probably low.

Rule of thumb

Hourly billing punishes you for getting faster. Fixed scope rewards it.

Fixed scope, clearly fenced

A fixed price only works with a fixed scope. Write down what is in, what is out, and how changes are priced, before anyone signs.

Checklist

Most scope creep is a missing sentence in the proposal.

Retainers that stay healthy

Retainers should buy capacity and priority, not unlimited work. Agree a monthly plan, review it every quarter and adjust openly.

Send a one-page monthly report: what shipped, what’s next, what moved.

Try this

Clients renew retainers when they can see the value without asking.

Raise prices calmly

Raise prices for new clients first, then for existing ones with notice and a reason. Most good clients expect it.

Publishing starting prices brought us fewer enquiries and better-fit ones.

Our experience

Under-charging doesn’t win loyalty. It wins clients who leave when someone cheaper appears.
