Designing for Bangla and English

Pair typefaces by colour and texture, not by family name. Set a paragraph in each script, squint and adjust until the greys match.

Hello from the studio. Here’s what we’ve been thinking about, making and reading this month.

Bilingual type pairs

Pair typefaces by colour and texture, not by family name. Set a paragraph in each script, squint and adjust until the greys match.

Line-height rules

Bangla needs more room: we start at 1.7 for body text against 1.5 for Latin, and never letter-space it.

Font picks

A short list of Bangla typefaces we trust for interfaces, with notes on weights, hinting and licensing.

Until next month — the Alphure team.
